Surf Reef Project Up By 1.8m

January 22nd, 2009

The Overstrand

The cost of the Bournemouth Surf Reef project has now reached £11.07 million, an increase of £1.81 million since the last budget forecast in June 2008.

The council hope to reimburse these costs from the sale of the surf pods.

Among the elements that have increased in price are:

  • The surf reef has gone up by a further £346,000 to £3.03m. The original budget was £1.359m
  • Refurbishing the Overstrand building and associated roadworks has increased by £678,000 to £3.22m
  • Project management will now cost £120,000 instead of £56,000
  • Site investigations have increased from £10,000 to £20,000
  • Communications will cost £25,000 instead of £20,000. The June budget forecast made no allowances at all for fitting out the surf pods or marketing them, even though these have always been part of the scheme.

Bournemouth East MP Tobias Ellwood admitted the increases were ‘frustrating’ but insisted: ‘In the long term, this will be a huge bonus for the town’.

Incompetence once again is the major factor in the Reef not being completed. I suggest that the councillor in charge should be sacked. Now, more money is required to complete the reef. May I suggest that this is a smoke screen for the future announcement that ‘ the council has decided that the costs of completion far outweigh the benefit of leaving it how it is.

Once again as already seen in Mount Maunganui and Opunake New Plymouth in New Zealand costs WILL escalate due to over promising and under delivery by all those involved in the project. Could a wave pool been built for a similar fee? Possibly, either way prepare for the fact that what works in a tank is highly unlikely to work in reality. Naive really and shows a lack of research prior to investment. Remember the emperors new clothes!!

the most distressing thing about this for the youngsters and the young at heart surfers that wished so much for something – not too much … is that prattes reef in california is being removed by alaskan divers, meades reef at the mount in NZ is to be removed as its been a failed high school science experiment and god knows how much more the people of opanake have to suffer just begging asr to complete blacks reef there. ( no one told them of the high school science experiments -they believed that the world would beat a path to their door) on proven litmus tests.)

bournemouth .. lets do our grief counselling and loss management now – or let the asr hype detox begin.

there will be no often , sustainable and lasttng knee height to overhead, 5 on a pipeline of grade of 8 , double the days and double the height of surfing ( tides and nightime in that?) those figures are “cherry picked ” when the testubes had a speck in the light flashing thru them. ( its ….. alive was the call from a local)

Over promising and underdelivery – give ASR a break as Mr Meade said “we all have to manage the expectations” and its all due to the “media hype”

non of which ASR apparently have had any input in??? only if you believe that people want coca cola without the adds.

ohh their noses (and wallets) are growing again

kiddies if you havent learnt by now – beware of the people and the boiled sweets that approach you near the playground. (read beach)

also beware of geeks bearing gifts -thats as old as the hills and we all still get caught.

exploitation of vulnerablities is nothing new at all – and if we dont pay them … they will take the surfers away to the land of sweets and honey to be beach boys in India?
